Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
This guide does not give one numbered list of the best universities in Turkey. It explains what to look at besides rankings, groups well-known private universities by field and city, and shows what to compare before you apply.
How university rankings work in Turkey
International rankings make a university more visible, but inside Turkey its standing depends on more than a position on a list. These are the things to look at:
- Faculty expertise and research output
- Accredited academic programs
- Industry partnerships and applied learning
- Graduate employment and professional pathways
- How the university is governed and how international it is
İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University, Özyeğin University, Bahçeşehir University and Yeditepe University are private foundation universities. İstanbul Medipol University, Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University, İstinye University and Altınbaş University are known for health sciences, engineering and applied fields.
Academic strengths by field
Universities in Turkey put their weight on different subjects. Some examples:
- Engineering and technology: TOBB University of Economics and Technology, OSTİM Technical University, Atılım University and MEF University teach engineering with close links to industry.
- Health and life sciences: Acıbadem Mehmet Ali Aydınlar University, Bezm-i Âlem Vakıf University, Biruni University and Lokman Hekim University focus on clinical training and applied research.
- Sciences and humanities: Bahçeşehir University, Kadir Has University, İstanbul Bilgi University, TED University and Özyeğin University offer interdisciplinary programs.
Where these universities are
Istanbul has the largest group of universities in this guide. They include İstanbul Aydın University, İstanbul Gelişim University, İstanbul Kent University, İstanbul Nişantaşı University, İstanbul Rumeli University and İstanbul Topkapı University.
In Ankara you will find Ankara Bilim University, Ankara Medipol University and Başkent University. İzmir Ekonomi University and Yaşar University are in İzmir, and Antalya Bilim University and Alanya University are in the Antalya area.
Program quality and career outcomes
Many private universities in Turkey build practical work into their programs. Look for:
- Mandatory internships or project-based learning
- Capstone projects linked to industry
- English-taught programs designed for international students
Ask each department how its internships and projects work and what its graduates go on to do.
How to choose a university
Compare the universities you like on these points:
- Program accreditation and how deep the curriculum goes
- Language of instruction and the academic support offered
- How closely the faculty works with industry
- Where graduates go after finishing
- The university's partnerships
Requirements and documents differ between universities, so applying on your own can cause delays.
Common mistakes students make
Even well-qualified students run into problems that could have been avoided:
- Choosing a university only because of its name
- Overlooking the strengths of a specific program
- Applying alone without understanding the university's procedures
- Underestimating how long documents take
- Picking a program that does not match your academic background
