Study Journalism in Turkey: Degrees and Universities

In Turkey, journalism is usually taught as a four-year bachelor's degree inside a communication faculty, followed by master's programs with or without a thesis. Programs differ a lot from one university to the next, especially in how much practical training they include, and that is hard to judge from scattered information.

At a glance

  • Journalism programs cover reporting, media ethics, digital storytelling and multimedia production.
  • Private universities usually teach practical skills alongside theory.
  • After the bachelor's, you can specialize through a master's degree with or without a thesis.
  • Graduates work in news media, on digital platforms, in corporate communication and in content strategy.
  • Most journalism programs in the program table below are taught in Turkish, so check the language before you apply.

How the degrees are structured

The bachelor's degree in Journalism usually takes four years and sits within a communication faculty. Theory courses such as media studies, communication theory and media law run alongside practical modules in reporting, editing and digital production. Over the years, students build skills in research, news writing, basic broadcasting and multimedia content.

At graduate level there are two routes. The master's with thesis is research oriented. It suits students who are thinking about an academic career or deeper specialization in media studies. The non-thesis master's is aimed at working life: it often includes advanced coursework and a final project, and it fits students heading for media organizations or communication departments.

Universities that teach journalism

Several private universities in Turkey teach journalism or a broader communication program. At the five below, StudyLeo lists these journalism-related programs:

  • Istanbul Medipol University: a Journalism bachelor's, taught in Turkish.
  • Istanbul Yeni Yuzyil University: a bachelor's in New Media and Journalism, taught in Turkish.
  • Nisantasi University: a non-thesis master's in New Media Communication and Journalism, taught in Turkish.
  • Uskudar University: a Journalism bachelor's and master's programs in New Media and Journalism, taught in Turkish.
  • Istanbul Aydın University: a Journalism bachelor's and master's programs with and without a thesis, taught in Turkish.

Yeditepe University is the exception: it teaches Journalism in English, as a bachelor's degree and as a master's with thesis. When you compare universities, check the course list, the teaching staff's background and whether an internship is part of the program.

Who journalism suits

Journalism suits students who follow current affairs, care about public communication and like structured writing. The work takes analytical thinking, attention to detail and the ability to work to deadlines. If you want to build research and storytelling skills, it is a natural fit.

It is a poor fit if you prefer a highly technical or lab-based degree. You will need to follow social, political and cultural developments throughout your studies, read a lot, judge information critically and communicate clearly.

Finding a program

To choose a journalism program, compare the curriculum focus, the amount of practical work and the graduate options at each university. The StudyLeo Program Filter sits below this section. It lets you narrow the list by field of interest, study level and your own preferences, so you do not have to go through each university one by one.

Once you adjust the filters, the matching programs appear and you can compare them side by side. Check the language column too. Apart from Yeditepe University's thesis master's, taught in English, the journalism programs in the table are taught in Turkish.
