How theology degrees are organized in Turkey

YÖK regulates theology programs, like all degree programs in Turkey. The universities in the table below list Islamic studies programs at bachelor's, master's and PhD level.

A bachelor's degree typically takes four years and covers Quranic studies, Islamic jurisprudence, philosophy of religion and comparative religion. Graduate programs focus on research methods, specialization and academic writing.

Why students choose theology in Turkey

Turkey has a long tradition of Islamic scholarship, and its universities teach it in a modern degree structure. That draws students who want to study religion in a regular university setting.

Who this path suits

Theology suits students who want to spend years working closely with religious texts and who plan careers in education, religious leadership, counseling or research.

It is a poor fit if all you want is cultural exposure. The programs demand a lot of reading, analytical thinking and steady work with classical and modern texts.

Language of instruction

Istanbul Sabahattin Zaim University lists its Islamic Sciences bachelor's in Arabic, or in a mix of Arabic and Turkish. Fatih Sultan Mehmet University lists it partly in Arabic, and Ibn Haldun University partly in English. Many master's programs in this field are listed in Turkish.

Be honest about your language level before you enroll. Theology means long texts, classical terminology and academic writing, and weak language skills add pressure quickly.

Common mistakes

Choosing on cost alone can leave you in a program that does not fit. Compare curriculum depth and faculty specialization, not just the lowest tuition.

Ignoring language readiness creates avoidable stress, because comprehension of theological texts depends on it.

Unofficial sources often get requirements and timelines wrong. Missing a deadline delays your enrollment, so track application dates closely.

Underestimating living expenses causes financial strain. Work out a realistic monthly budget before you arrive.

If you would rather not work through several university portals alone, you can apply through StudyLeo. Registration, transfer support and visa assistance are free, and we charge no service fee on applications.
