FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions and Answers
A search for the best universities in Turkey usually ends in a long list with no clear way to tell the options apart. Rankings show a position, but they say little about daily study or what a degree leads to. Turkey has a large higher education system, yet international students tend to concentrate on a smaller group of universities. Comparing a few of them on the same points works better than reading one more ranking.
Key Takeaways
Turkey has 208 universities and 79 of them are foundation (private) universities, so narrowing the list comes first.
Practical training and industry links affect career outcomes, so check both for every program you consider.
English-taught programs are widely available in the major cities.
Planning your applications early reduces delays and rejections.
We suggest handling the whole process through one platform, StudyLeo.
Turkey's higher education in numbers
Turkey has 208 universities in total, and 79 of them are foundation (private) universities. More than 300,000 international students study in the country, and they come from more than 200 countries. Istanbul alone has more than 60 universities.
With that many options, filtering matters more than browsing.
What to look for in a university
A university's reputation tells you less than its daily academic life and how it prepares you for work. Check each university for:
Laboratories and research centers that are kept up to date
Project-based, practical coursework
International faculty and classrooms with students from many countries
Active student clubs and campus life
Internships and industry collaboration
Ask the admissions office for examples of each, such as lab names or internship partners, instead of relying on a brochure.
Private universities to start from
Some foundation universities come up often when international students compare options, mostly because of their facilities and the range of programs. These nine are a reasonable place to start, and the table at the end of this section adds location, type and rating for them and for several others.
Bahçeşehir University has a global campus network and an urban location.
İstanbul Medipol University is strong in health and applied sciences.
Yeditepe University has a large campus and a wide faculty structure.
İstanbul Aydın University has a high number of international students.
Üsküdar University focuses on psychology and health fields.
Biruni University is oriented toward health sciences.
Altınbaş University has centrally located campuses.
Nişantaşı University has modern city campuses.
Beykent University offers a wide range of programs.

Campus life and learning environment
You will spend several years on campus, so the daily environment affects both how much you enjoy it and how well you study.
Large campuses often include libraries, labs, sports centers and social spaces.
Student clubs help international students build a network.
Campuses with both local and foreign students make cultural adaptation easier.
Urban campuses in Istanbul and Ankara give direct access to internships and city life.
Common mistakes and better planning
These four errors are easy to avoid:
Applying without a priority list. Rank your choices by program, teaching language and fees first.
Trusting unofficial sources. Confirm requirements and fees with the university or an advisor.
Preparing documents late. Start collecting them as soon as you have a shortlist.
Comparing too many universities at once. A short list is easier to compare properly.
We recommend using StudyLeo both to choose a university and to apply. Registration, transfer and visa support are free, and because we work directly with the universities, applications are coordinated and easier to follow.
