Medical Studies in Turkey: Structure, Language and Training

Medical programs in Turkey run for six years and are taught in Turkish or English, depending on the university. Students move from pre-clinical sciences into hospital rotations and finish with a full-time internship.

How the six years are organized

The programs are usually six years long and combine pre-clinical sciences, clinical sciences and hospital-based practice.

  • Years 1 to 3, pre-clinical: foundational medical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and pathology, supported by laboratory work.

  • Years 4 and 5, clinical: students rotate through the main medical departments and see patients under supervision.

  • Year 6, internship: full-time clinical practice under professional supervision.

Careers and recognition

Graduates go into clinical practice, postgraduate training, research or healthcare management. The internship year gives practical experience, but where you can practice depends on licensing rules.

The universities that offer medicine here are recognized by YÖK, Turkey's higher education authority. Whether a Turkish medical degree is accepted abroad is each country's decision, and some require additional exams. Check the rules of the country where you want to work before you apply.
